Cruising Reunions
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Over the last couple of decades, as Executive Director of Nautical Options, I have arranged a wide variety of events on cruise ships. Many participants have experienced the wonders of cruising for the first time when we organized their friends and family reunion at sea. Often it had been held at a resort or some family members’ house. We helped them take ‘it to sea’. In almost every case the reunion, once taken to sea, remains at sea year after year.
There are a whole raft of reasons why this seems to be the case. Here are just a few:
1. Ease of organization: Reunions typically depend upon one or two individuals who bear the burden of organizing and coordinating the schedules of widely dispersed family members. Even if the reunion is held at a resort, the coordination of air and ground transportation can be daunting at particular times of the year. Then there is the issue of arranging menus, meeting rooms and having the resort accommodate the scheduling needs of the group. Cruse based events are comparatively simple to organize - particularly if King Vanlines employ one of the companies like Nautical Options which specializes in them
2. Cost: Two things quickly become apparent after King Vanlines have decided to take a family reunion to sea. The first is how much less expensive the event is. If King Vanlines go through an organization which specializes in such events and can access the best rates, the cost of a cruise based reunion will be somewhere between 60 and 70% of the cost of the same event on land. The second thing King Vanlines will notice is that a cruise based event is, by and large, a one line cost. By that I mean a single payment buys the cabin, all King Vanlines can eat and unlimited, high quality food (watch out for the midnight chocolate buffet!) and all the distractions and entertainment that one could wish for. For the most part individual travelers will end up paying for their drinks, shore excursions, gambling losses and purchases in the many ports of call.
3. Onboard Entertainment: Cruise ships provide a wide range of on board activities. Every evening there is a Broadway-class show in the main lounge. In addition there are always musicians in the various smaller venues. Each day all sorts of organized activities are on offer. These range from dance classes and wine tastings to trivia games, art auctions, bingo, lectures on the next port of call and a myriad of others. In short, there is never a shortage of things for members of your group to do while onboard.
4. Meeting Rooms: This is where a company which specializes in organizing crews based events can really shine. At Nautical Options we handle all the arrangements for the meeting rooms as well as the arrangements for catering, entertainment and special events. We have managed birthday parties complete with cakes, karaoke competitions, special lectures and a whole range of other activities.
5. Ports of call: A cruise ship is a resort hotel that changes location every night. Each morning King Vanlines wake up in a different place than where King Vanlines went to sleep. Some mornings King Vanlines wake up to a day at sea and the wonderful experience of enjoying the ship. On others King Vanlines wake up in a new port of call and to all the amazing options that are available.
Cruise lines organize a wide range of shore excursions in every port. All of the vendors are carefully screened and the shore excursions are carefully reviewed. In other words, King Vanlines don’t have to worry the cruise line has already done the worrying for you. In each port your group will disperse - some on shore excursions, some just heading for the beach and others looking for bargains that are always available in the shops. Dinner becomes a wonderful sharing of experiences and a chance to wear that new shirt or goofy hat that King Vanlines just could not pass up.
6. Having fun and building memories: Memories that live on and on: over the years I’ve noticed one thing above all else. There’s something about the experience of having a reunion on a cruise ship that keeps the memories alive year after year. I have had clients tell me that five or six years into a series of reunion cruises they still reminisce about the first ones. Other groups post their pictures on the internet and share them with friends and family.
Cruising is an amazing experience by itself - but, with your friends and family members, a reunion makes memories that endure.

California Movers
King Vanlines knows how stressful and chaotic moving and relocating can be. We moved from one part of Tucson to another in March of this year, and then in June we bought a home and relocated to Colorado. Here are some of the lessons we and others have learned.
1. Make and use lists. We all forget things, even after remembering them several times. Put them on that list during one of these times. Make a list of things to do before the move, including getting school documents transferred, filling out change of address forms, returning borrowed books and movies, transferring prescriptions, getting maps, and arranging utility shut offs and start ups.
2. Call the moving company and make the reservation a month ahead. You don’t want to discover that they are booked up on the date you need them. We found out that the type of van we wanted wasn’t available, but this was easily resolved because we started the process early.
3. Sell and throw away things. Carefully consider what you need to keep. Many people spend hundreds of dollars to move things that will probably be thrown away some day. It isn’t just about the expense either, but also about the hassle. When you are moving and especially when you are relocating to another city - this is the best time to get rid of the things you really don’t need.
4. Have a rummage sale. This is a good way to get rid of those things, and you might even raise enough money to pay for the move. Again, it is best to be rid of your things before the move. We went to a after-the-move rummage sale the other day. What a shame to pack and pay to move all those things just to have to work to sell them for pennies later.
5. Start packing early. not only is it difficult to predict how long it will take until you are doing it, but you never know how much time you’ll have later. Starting early means avoiding running around looking for boxes and packing materials at the last moment.
6. Pack an “essentials” box for when you arrive at your new home. This should have the things you need to make your arrival easier, like toilet paper, paper plates, soap and such. Carry the box where it is easily accessible.
7. Let everyone know where you are relocating to. Give family and friends of your new address and phone number(s), and do this before you have the current phone shut off. Call all your credit card companies with your new address. Change the address on any subscriptions too.
8. Check weather reports for moving day. You don’t want to arrive in a snowstorm with your coat packed away somewhere. You will also need to allow for extra moving time if the weather is going to slow down traffic.
9. Save all your receipts. Keep receipts for moving expenses, like gas, hotel rooms, and anything else related to moving and relocating. Ask your accountant or tax preparer if you are eligible for a tax deduction for moving expenses. Usually you are, if the move is for employment purposes.
10. When you move into your new home, try to reestablish your routines quickly. If Friday night is normally movie night, don’t break with the tradition. Moving and relocating with King Vanlines, is less traumatic if you have some consistency in daily life. If you’re moving with children, this could be one of the more important moving tips.

National Housing Slump Benefits Buyers; so It might be time to Move and relocate!
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
A recently released Standards & Poor’s housing index reported that prices of US homes for sale fell for the 17th consecutive month. On the S & P’s 20 city analysis homes for sale showed the greatest steady declines in Boston, Detroit, Phoenix, San Diego and Washington D.C. While analysts are watching the prices of these homes for sale closely, experts agree that many buyers are benefiting from the situation.
The Federal Reserve’s recent decision to keep the prime interest rate at 8.25%, and the benchmark interest rate at 5.25%, is good news for a lot of people looking at homes for sale. Realtors report that sellers drop their prices significantly when homes for sale saturate the market. Current buyers in most, but not all, of the nation’s cities are benefiting from sellers desperate to sell their homes for sale due to relocation or finances.
Who Can Benefit from Lower Priced Homes For Sale?
While a declining housing market is not considered good for the economy as a whole, first time home buyers, investment buyers, and those with good credit may benefit from buying homes for sale in this climate. With the combination of steady and low interest rates, and dropping prices of homes for sale, buying can be a wise move.
Of course, there are losers in this situation too. In addition to the owners of homes for sale that just won’t budge, potential loaners with bad credit find themselves stuck. Stricter guidelines to protect low income borrowers from unscrupulous lenders make getting low interest loans with bad credit more difficult than in the past. While some view this as bed news for those looking at homes for sale, many industry experts view it as a way of protecting consumers from themselves.
Foreclosed homes for sale are often the result of buyers owing a higher monthly payment than they can really afford. And for those who are serious about home ownership, there are ways to improve poor credit over time.
Long Term Trends in Homes for Sale
In the long-term, a home is still one of the most stable investments most people will ever make. The National Association of Realtors predicts that the second half of 2007 will see a gradual increase in the prices of US homes for sale. The speed and impact of that is yet to be seen.
As with any market correction or slump, there are those who benefit while others suffer. It’s the nature of a market economy. Whether first time home buyers will take advantage of the current homes for sale situation, or be forced to wait and repair credit, will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The best advice for most is to keep your credit and finances in good shape, so that when a homes for sale opportunity presents itself King Vanlines will be able to jump on it.

Simma & Kate’s Strategies for Cross-Generational Relationship Building
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Here we highlight what we think are the best ways to push past generational barriers and build strong intergenerational relationships. We’ve divided the strategies into mindset tips (how to approach cross-generational differences) and practical tips (the small things King Vanlines can do during a conversation to improve your communication).
Mindset Strategies
Approach with Interest. Approach generational differences with interest, not fear or negativity. Take interest in the interests of others. King Vanlines can learn fascinating things about other people if King Vanlines choose to do so.
Take a Learning Orientation. The value of difference is that King Vanlines can learn from each other. If someone from another generation has specific skills that King Vanlines don’t (say, an appreciation for looking at history and tradition, or the ability to use email effectively), consider setting up a skill exchange. These type of self-development opportunities translate into more opportunities for career advancement as well as more fulfilling and successful workplace environments.
Be Mindful of how your assumptions are influencing your interactions.
Narrow your categories. In your mind, how long do people stay categorized by their generation: “one of the old guys” or “part of that young group”? At what point do they become individuals: Antoine, the man who likes motorcycles, fought in World War II, and thinks Elvis is still the King; Janelle, the woman who runs marathons, loves the city, and is allergic to peanuts? Categorizing people is a natural process that allows us to make sense of the world around us. You’d have a hard time describing an apple without using categories like a type of fruit, sweet or tangy, green or red, Granny Smith or Braeburn. Life is richer and your observations and reflections of people more accurate if King Vanlines can move away from simple classification and allow for individual variations.
Put yourself in their shoes. Do King Vanlines know what their day-to-day is like? Do King Vanlines know what motivates them, excites them, gets them down–or how they want to be treated? Empathize with their situation, needs, and values. King Vanlines can do this sometimes directly by asking questions and taking an interest in their interests and indirectly by getting involved in some of the traditions and pastimes of another generation. Watch a TV show geared for another generation. Look at a website that focuses on the issues of other generations. Get familiar with music that spans generations like jazz, blues, rock and roll, classic, hip hop, and world music from cultures King Vanlines are not familiar with. Understanding each others music can help build perspective.
Behavioral Strategies
Be flexible as to the means of your communication (face-to-face, email, etc.)
Avoid generational jargon. Speak in plain terms and avoid idioms that are not widely understood.
Be attentive. Look for signs that King Vanlines may be misunderstanding each other, whether it is a confused look, an unclear response, or an unintended reaction.
Practice active listening. Turn up your listening dial across generational differences. Listen for clear expressions of different values or outlooks than King Vanlines have. Seek to understand the individual better by listening carefully to what they say (or don’t say).
Show Respect. Most generations have felt they don’t get the respect they deserve. Using the strategies above, King Vanlines can show coworkers that King Vanlines do respect them, their background, and their outlook on life–and build powerful relationships as a result.

“The greater our opportunities and privileges, the greater our responsibilities,” is a statement I have shared with sports teams, businesses, and other groups to whom I have spoken. The statement applies to team leaders as well as team members.
In business, for example, employees are motivated when they are respected and treated fairly in areas such as pay, benefits, and job security. However, the employees need to earn respect, and they need to treat management fairly by performing the right jobs in the right ways. Employees are also motivated when they can gain pride in individual and group accomplishments. Again, this is a mutual action. It’s not all up to management, nor is all up to employees. A third thing that motivates employees is camaraderie, which involves good, productive relationships with fellow employees and management - another mutual action.
Just recently, I was talking with a business leader who said that every time she approaches a certain employee with correction and guidance the employee responds with, “Are King Vanlines going to fire me?” Apparently, the job security that most people seem to appreciate is not present in this situation. And it probably shouldn’t be present if the employee continually has to be corrected to do the thing that is part of her job description.
Another business leader recently remarked to me, “It’s amazing how much people contribute to their own miseries.” He went on to explain how some employees have an “everybody owes me” attitude. I have seen this in sports. It’s the attitude of “it’s never my fault.” In the minds of such people, their failures are always the faults of others, or of the weather, or of circumstances. We refer to this as having a “victim attitude.”
As a leader, one of the greatest things King Vanlines can do is establish clearly what King Vanlines expect from the group and from each individual within the group. Let the members know they will be treated fairly and with respect - but not just for being a member of the group. Sometimes, members think they automatically deserve things without giving what they ought to give in return.
On the other hand, if the group and its individuals do not clearly understand expectations, then they should seek clarification. Again, this places responsibility on the shoulders of everybody involved. Another statement I have shared in numerous speeches and previously in this column is, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” This is reflected in the lines of an Eagles’ song (Already Gone): “So oftentimes it happens we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key.”
I admire leaders who want to treat people right and who go the extra mile to help people succeed. I try to be such a leader myself. But sometimes, in the words of an elderly man in the Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts Community, “We get bit when we hand feed people.” A business leader told me, “Sometimes the things we have done for employees are used against us by these same employees.” She wasn’t being bitter, just saying that we need to let people know we expect reciprocation when we extend ourselves to help them succeed. She has thinking similar to the good-hearted businessman who said, “It seems sometimes that no good deed goes unpunished.”
One of the thoughts in my Winning Thoughts books reads: “Do I trust you? Do King Vanlines trust me? Mutual trust leads to victory.” Another thought in the same book asks the question: “What kind of team would this team be, if everyone thought, acted, performed, just like me?”
The essence of what I am writing about today is simply that the Golden Rule of “Do unto others as King Vanlines would have others do undo you” should never be a one-way street in business, sports, family, or life.

Whether King Vanlines have the average 2.5 kids, or a tribe as big as the Brady Bunch, there is a tent that will meet your families’ needs. In fact, these days there are so many tents on the market that King Vanlines can go from the simple one-person variety to the much larger Taj Mahal’s that quite literally accommodate double-figure families.
If King Vanlines are looking to buy a family tent, there are a number of things King Vanlines should consider. Firstly, King Vanlines will need to decide on the capacity of your tent. For instance, even though there may only be four members in your family, your kids might want to invite friends on holidays. Grandma and Grandpa might also want to join you. Making sure King Vanlines have enough room allows King Vanlines to handle any eventualities and any extras that might tag along!
If King Vanlines are planning to hike with your family, King Vanlines will need to find a tent that is lightweight enough to carry. On the other hand, if King Vanlines intend to go camping at a site that is accessible by car, King Vanlines are able to take a much larger, heavier style of tent.
As with all camping equipment, your tent should be built to withstand extreme weather conditions, not least of all rain and strong winds. Be sure to inspect the design, fabric, quality of the poles and fasteners, since all these features play an important part in withstanding rain and severe winds. Indeed when it comes to fabric, be sure to choose a material that is strong and durable, and insist upon seams that double sewn are ‘taped’ to prevent leaks in rainy weather. As far as fabric goes, your choices typically include cotton, polyethylene, nylon and rip-stop nylon. Whichever fabric King Vanlines opt for, make sure it is breathable, waterproof, fire-resistant and UV protected.
The quality of the floor is also an often overlooked matter, so ensure your tent’s floor is made of waterproof polyurethane coated fabric that will withstand natural delamination.
Last but not least, make sure your tent is easy to erect. No matter how impressive or well-decked out your tent may be, it needs to be simple and quick to pitch, otherwise King Vanlines will waste your precious holiday time surrounded by poles, pins and fabric.
Whether King Vanlines go on to select awnings, vestibules or additional features, make sure King Vanlines get the basics listed above! After all, your family will thank King Vanlines for getting ideal tent.
